Imphal, February 14, 2010:
Owing to the ongoing economic blockade called by the Senapati District Students Association (SDSA) at least 70 goods laden trucks heading towards Imphal from Dimapur remained stranded at Mao Gate today.
The Association has been imposing the economic blockade since February 1 demanding improvement of the pathetic condition of NH 39 passing through the district.
The agitating student body urged to continue with the stir until and unless any reputed private firms like BRO is being roped in to undertake the improvement works of the route.
Despite signing many MoUs earlier, the State Government has been maintaining a stoic silence over the demands for improving the condition of the route, a leader of SDSA said, adding the student body will never call off its legitimate agitation until and unless the authority concerned hands over the repairing works to the BRO or any other competent firm.
Alleging that the State Government has not officially invited the student body for talks in connection with the ongoing stir, the student body reaffirmed to stick to their demands even if the Government invites them for talks.
The blockade has affected normal life in the valley districts as people queue up to fill oil from oil pump stations.
In view of the recently concluded MMCs quinquennial meeting at Senapati town and the hardship faced by the public, the student body relaxed its stir for 36 hours a few days back.
