"Activities of extremist groups have taken a new trend in the state of Manipur", stated the Sub Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) of the Imphal East district police station during an interaction with a team of media Friday in connection with the arrest of five member of the United Peoples' Party of Kangleipak (UPPK), a militant group operating in the state of Manipur.
While briefing the media persons at the Porompat police station in Imphal East district of Manipur, the SDPO revealed that activities of the extremist groups have taken a new trend as several violent activities and extortions were often being carried out by drug abusers and persons, especially women from broken families who were slowly getting involved in the activities of the extremist.
He further informed that such similar cases have been unearth following the arrest of five activist of UPPK, including two women activists, and who were said to have involved in such extremist activities.
The five have been identified as P.Kripa (30), son of Late P Babu of Liwa road, Oinam Leikai, Kh Deepak (23), son of Late Kh Kumar of Liwa road, L Inao (25), son of Lokendro of Naorem Leikai (Van driver), Ksh Surbala, daughter of Jiten of Kakwa Naorem Leikai and Ksh Thoibi Devi (30), daughter of Mangi of Kakwa Naorem Leikai.
The SDPO informed that the arrest of Kripa on March 28 from Lamlong bazar in Imphal East led to the disclosure of Kripa of his involvement with four others in the attacked of an advocate who was shot at his leg at his resident of Imphal West district on March 24.The SDPO further informed the incident was carried out along with two others who are absconding now and are said to be brothers of the two women arrested.
The SDPO also informed the two arrested women were cousins and added Deepak and the two absconding person were said to be drug abusers.
However, the two arrested women stated they have no idea of the incident but that they were taken on the pretext of consoling sick persons at Lamphel the very night of the attacked.
They came to realized of the incident only after they were handed the gun used in the attacked to hide from the police, the two women pleaded.
While Kripa was arrested on March 28, four of the others were arrested Friday from various places in the state.
