Imphal, April 27 2010:
In protest against the construction of a wall across the road connecting JNIMS and Khongpal Kongkham Leikai, a large number of students and womenfolk staged a Wakat Meepham at the community hall of Kongpal Kongkham Leikai today.
On the other hand, the JAC against closing of JNIMS Road has announced its decision intensifying agitation against the Government until the latter review its stand on closure of the road locally known as Pong Lambi.
The Wakat Meepham had been organised in response to the call of the JAC.
Talking to mediapersons on the sidelines of the protest demonstration, JAC convenor Irom Singhajit informed that prior to the Wakat Meepham, a peaceful protest march had been planned and accordingly permission had been taken from Deputy Commissioner of Imphal East district.
However, as preparations being made for the peaceful protest mark, SP of Imphal East Th Radheshyam had forwarded a letter to the JAC alleging that the ongoing agitation of the JAC is being supported by KCP (MC).
The SP also warned that the protest march should not be taken out if the JAC does not want to face the consequences, Singhajit informed.
Decrying such false allegations and threat, Singhajit said that it is an attempt of the Government to mislead the people in democratic agitation of the JAC and to sideline the real issue.
The agitation being spearheaded by the JAC with the support of the people has no connection with any organisation or UG group and there is no need for that, Singhajit said.
Regardless of such misconduct and threats of the Government, the JAC would never desert the affected people till their democratic rights have been restore to them, Singhajit added.
