Meet calls for effective action to end crimes against women

North East Dialogue Forum in collaboration with the Women Action for Development and Meira Paibis and Youth Club of Patsoi Yurembam organized a public meeting on Crimes against Women and Children in Manipur at Yurembam Community Hall today.
Md.Rabi Khan, Advocate, High Court of Manipur; Irengbam Arun, Senior Journalist; L.Pishak Singh, Chairperson of Child Welfare Committee, Bishnupur; Sobita Mangsatabam, Secretary of Women Action for Development; L.Ibochou, President of YAACHAL and Konjengbam Guni Leima , President of Iramdam Lamjing Meira Lup attended the meeting as Presidium members cum resource persons.
The welcome and Key note address were given by Laishram Chaobihal Devi and Mangsatabam Babycha respectively.
Around 200 hundred people participated in the meeting during which various issues related to rising crimes against women and girls in Manipur were discussed.
At the end of the meeting, a Charter of Demands was also adopted for submission to the relevant authorities including the Prime Minister for necessary action.
The demands included establishment of special court to deal with cases concerning crimes against humanity and violence against women and children in particular, repealing Armed Forces Special Powers Act, 1958, establishment of a Legislative Forum on Violence against women and children, constituting a competent Advisory Committee to deal with prevailing situation of Manipur with due representation of prominent members from civil society organizations, urging all Armed Non-State Actors develop a code of conduct to protect civilian population to control proliferation of small arms and ammunitions in the North Eastern States of India, urging the Political parties to incorporate their stand to protect innocent people from crimes and injustice as one of their election manifestoes.
