Unidentified gunmen shot dead a seating zilla parishad member and also a member of the MPP Central Committee in his house at Nambol Thiyam Leikai under Nambol police station of Bishnupur district last night.
With two bullet wounds in his chest and underarm, he was rushed to the hospital, where doctors declared him brought dead.
Decrying the murder, locals rose up and submitted a memorandum to the Chief Minister urging him to book the culprits at the earliest.
Manipur People Party (MPP) has also strongly condemned the murder of the member who is also a member of the executive committee of the party at the district level.
Police recovered one empty case of AK ammunition from the spot.
Six unidentified gunmen suspected to be cadres of an underground group shot him last night around 10.30 pm, police as well as locals said.
Both the bullets exited the body.
Two of the six armed miscreants entered the house of 52-year old Thokchom Sanayaima of Nambol Thiyam Leikai under Nambol police station of Bishnupur district and shot at him twice.
Family with the help of the neighbours who rushed to the house on hearing gim fire rushed him to a hospital in Imphal.
But he succumbed to his bullet injuries on the way, locals said.
Police is yet to establish the group responsible for the murder of the member of the zilla parishad and also a member of MPP, Bishnupur district but has hinted it relates with a monetary demand served by a faction of KCP.
Apabi, wife of murdered Sanayaima recalled that her husband opened the front door when someone knocked calling "Pabung Pabung �".
She thought went that they were friends of her son.
Sanayaima open the door despite her request to stay inside and to let her enquire more of those who were knocking at their door.
She followed him and a he opened the door, two unidentified persons were seen standing near the door.
One of them with a big fire arm fired two shots at her husband without a wod and hurriedly left the place.
Before they knocked at the door sounds of fire crackers were also heard, Apabi said.
In the aftermath of the murder, a public meeting was held Nambol Thiyam Leikai Girls' LP School.
The meeting in which was attended by member of gram panchayats and zilla parishads of Bishnupur district strongly condemned the murderous act of the miscreants.
It also formed a JAC to launch various forms of agitations against the killing incident.
They also lodged a complaint with the Chief Ministerby submitting a memorandum.
They are demanding booking of the culprits at the earliest with the condition that they will refuse to accept the dead body until government books the culprits behind the murder.
They also demanded a rehabilitation package to the family of the victim.
They also pressed to the government for providing a relief compensation of Rs 50 lakh to the family of the deceased.
People came to submit the memorandum to the CM in two buses, a truck and some cars.
They were blocked by police in front of Nambol police station.
Later police allowed some of the JAC members to proceed and submit the memorandum to the CM.
Manipur Zilla Parishad Forum and Manipur State Panchayat Parishad while expressing strong condemnation of the murder of their colleague has decided to extend support to any kind of agitation launched by the JAC.
Terming the act as a barbaric act, they also demanded clarification on the matter from underground groups behind the murder within the next two days.
If there is no clarification, they will treat the killing as a handy work of some persons, with vested interests, they said.
In the meantime, MPP has strongly condemned the murder of the zilla parishad member who was also a member of the executive committee of Bishnupur district MPP unit.
A hurriedly called meeting of the party today termed the murder as a cruel and merciless act of armed miscreants.Its president, Dr Nimaichand Luwang termed the murder a cowardly act.
