Ukhrul faces 45-day CrPC Act; no harassment case till date

In spite of the continuing prohibitory order under section 144 of CrPC Act and deployment of additional security forces in Ukhrul town since July 13, there has been no official report of harassment meted out to innocent civilians and violent confrontations.
An official report informed that no civilian has lodged any complaint of harassment by forces at the Ukhrul police station, and not a single instance of public confrontation with the security personnel has ever been recorded.
In an interaction with media persons on Tuesday, Deputy Commissioner Modak Hrisheekesh Arvind assured the public in Ukhrul that "police will not harass any civilian" while adding the forces are for "security and peace" in the district.
He appealed to the general public not to believe in "rumours" which it felt could have an adverse impact in the town.
This time, Ukhrul has experienced the longest ever imposition of prohibitory order under section 144 of CrPC Act of 45 days.
On Sunday night at Dungrei Junction, the Ukhrul SDPO and his official driver were physically assaulted by some men in an inebriated condition.
Police have lodged an FIR against the two accused and detained in police custody.
The Deputy Commissioner said the district senior police official went to the spot in good faith after some drunkards created a public nuisance, but was rather assaulted by the accused persons.
Police also have to resort to blank firing after the reported attempt to snatch their arms by some of the assailants.
On July 30, United Naga Council (UNC) has proposed a rally in four Naga district of Manipur.
In this regard, when queried by reporters, the District Magistrate said the relevant organisation has not sought permission for the programme.
