North eastern states has its own affinity in terms of its life style and hence the predilection of diseases.Even the types of cancer disease in the region are unique.
Professor Th Tomcha,head of radiotheraphy in Regional Institute of Medical Sciences Hospital Imphal said this during the inaugural function of two days conference of association of radiation oncology of India(AROI),north east zonal chapter here today.
He said the highest incidents of nasopharynx cancers in the country is found in Nagaland due to their food habits while Mizoram has the highest incidents of esophagus cancers.The grim situation in Mizoram is competing with those in Japan and is caused mainly by extensive consumption of tobacco.Manipur also has a good number of lungs cancer cases,the professor added.
But the north east not only lacks in the number of oncologists but more so in the treatment infrastructure.There are four cancer regional centres in north east including the one in RIMS,he said.
Commenting on the conference,he said the just five/six years old north east zonal chapter of AROI 's conference here would be a good platform for the sharing their experiences and findings in their respective research activities especially for the post graduate students of the region.
Many medical and radiation oncologists from various parts of the region are attending the two days CME on upper GI malignancies and VI annual conference of AROI.On the first day of the conference today,Dr RC Mistry,Dr BK Mohanti,Dr Dutta and Dr Puneet Gupta presented papers on surgery of upper GI malignancies,radiation in upper GI malignancies,SRS in upper GI malignancies and Chemotheraphy in upper
GI malignancies.
The second technical session of the gathering will be held tomorrow.Former RIMS Director and former Vice chancellor of Manipur university Prof NB Singh,MLA of Khurai AC was the chief guest while new RIMS director S Sekharjit presided over the day's inaugural function.
