Paying homage to 183 departed drivers of the state marked the Drivers' Day was observance today at Sinam Shyama Devi Town Hall, Chingmeirong under the aegis of All Manipur Road Transport Drivers' and Motor Workers' Union.
The observance function was graced by MLA N Mangi, SP of Imphal East Th Radheshyam, L Sotinkumar, secretary, AITUC, Manipur; Kh Borkeshore, chairman, ICM as the chief guest, president and guest of honour respectively.
Convenor of Surface Transport Eco and Environment Society, Kohima (Nagaland), Chito Angami; president of Senapati District Drivers' Union, Kapani; secretary of Petroleum Land Transport Workers' Federation of India, Dimapur (Nagaland), V Keto Sema attended the observance programme as special invitees.
Speaking on the occasion, MLA N Mangi said, the government should formulate proper policy to ensure the safety of the drivers who are working under demanding condition.
The drivers' unions should also pressurise the government to achieve their demand for safety.
SP of Imphal East district, Th Radheshyam said, the service of the drivers is one of the greatest services to mankind.
He assured possible held towards the welfare and safety of the drivers.
The observance function was also marked by distribution of blanket each to retired drivers of the state.
Baby Chanchan has enthralled the gatherings with devotional songs.
The Manipur Drivers' Welfare Association has also organised the day's observance programme at its office located at MG Avenue here.
The programme was attended by president of Manipur Drivers' Welfare Association, Mongjam Ibohal; general secretary of Manipur Truck Owners' Welfare Association, Y Lokeshore; former president of AMUCO, Ito Tongbram; executive member of Manipur Truck Owners' Welfare Association, Ch Paka, vice-president of All Manipur Nupi Marup, M Sakhi, secretary of All Manipur Ima Keithel, L Memcha and Advocate S Gomti as the presidium members.
The gathering offered tribute to the departed drivers who lost their lives while on duty.
Retired drivers were also honoured on the occasion.
The association also doled out monetary assistance to the son of driver Yambem Saratchandra of Lourembam village on the occasion.
The day observance was also held at Sangakpham Keihtel under the aegis of All Manipur Petroleum Tanker Drivers' Union.
The programme was graced by Padmashree RK Jhaljit as the chief guest.
Senior Depot Manager of IOC Ltd, Chingmeirong, Kh Ibochou was the guest of honour while president of All Manipur Petroleum Tanker Drivers' Union, Y Bhupenchandra Gosh was the president.
Paying respect to departed drivers on duty marked the observance function.
