The Zeliangrong community in Delhi will be celebrating the Silver Jubilee of Gaan-Ngai in New Delhi on 29th January, 2011 under the theme 'Echo from Makuilongdi' to spread the message of peace, love and humanity and promoting traditional values.
The first Chakaan Gaan- Ngai in Delhi was celebrated in January 1986 since then the Zeliangrong people has been observing the festival with traditional music, dance, games and sports over sumptuous Zeliangrong Naga cuisines with well-wishers from other communities in our humble efforts in spreading the message of peace, love and humanity and promoting traditional values, stated Thenbilung Kamei, Chairman Gaan- Ngai Silver Jubilee Committee in a pressed released through an email.
Competitions in groups and individual levels in folk-song and dance competitions, traditional wrestling, debate and fashion shows are some of the highlights of the jubilee of Gaan-Ngai in Delhi.
A Souvenir Commemorating the Gaan-Ngai Silver Jubilee will also be brought out this year, he said.
He recalled that many years the people Zeliangrong have been conducting cultural outreaches during Chakaan Gaan- Ngai in Delhi to all sections of the society.
In 1993 the Gaan Ngai was held with Prime Minister P.V.Narasimha Rao, in 1994 President of India, Shankar Dayal Sharma and in 1995 Vice-President K.R Narayanan grace the occasion as chief guests and the Zeliangrong people presented Naga traditional dance, folk song and Naga shawl to them.
Eminent people like Holkhomang Haokip, Apok Jamir, P.R Kyndiah, Tapir Gao, Dr.Thokchom Meinya, Ms Alka Lamba and others as our esteemed Chief Guests in the past, he stated.
Chakaan Gaan- Ngai Silver Jubilee Committee while inviting all Zeliangrong people in Assam, Manipur and Nagaland and all the well-wishers to join the jubilee celebration with their valuable suggestions and contributions.
Zeliangrong Welfare Association, Delhi and the Festival Organizing Committee also appeal to all Zeliangrong people, particularly the Khangchius and Luchius to extend their kind cooperation and support in all possible ways to make the Silver Jubilee a grand success, the released added.
It is sad to learn that the most concentrate Zeliangrong people in Tamenglong district has not organizing such important festival.
With the coming of Christianity in the Zeliangrong region all important and renown customs and traditional die out in the region.
