Imphal, November 30 2010:
The need for a constructive debate on the recent Supreme Court's interim order that prohibits children below 12-year from going outside states (for Assam and Manipur) was initiated at the One Day Perspective Building Workshop of Coalition on Children's Right to Protect (CCRP) Manipur held at the MNP+ conference hall today.
The workshop observed that the greatest challenge to protection of rights of children is the increasing trend of child trafficking.
The unprecedented intervention by Supreme Court by passing interim orders, and the frequent visit of National Commission to Protection of Child Rights in the state has indicated the magnitude of the abysmal situation.
However, there is need for a constructive debate on the recent Supreme Court's interim order that prohibits children below 12 years of age from going outside the states (for Manipur and Assam) for studies, CCRP observed in its introductory statement at the workshop.
The prohibition was imposed in Manipur and Assam, as many children are trafficked under the pretext of imparting free education to children from these two states by some evil characters.
However, whether this prohibition is the right step to control the clandestine strategies of child trafficking is a poser.
Moreover, the fundamental right to education and freedom of movement of children inside the country for receiving quality education should not be trampled at any cost.
As such a public debate over the interim order is called for, the introductory statement added.
The Coalition of Children's Right to Protection (CCRP) Manipur organized the "One Day Perspective Building Workshop of CCRP" as part of an awareness programme of the rights of children and their protection.
The forenoon technical session of the workshop was moderated by retired Lt Col Kiyam Achouba and a paper on the topic "Overall Perspective of CCRP" presented by Keisham Pradipkumar was discussed in the open forum that followed.
The evening session discussed on the paper presented by AK Sanaton on "Strategic Media Planning for CCRP.
