Imphal, March 31, 2011:
A day after suspected UGs fired at the residence of its president, Manipur People's Party (MPP) today lambasted the government for its failure to provide security to the party president.
The party also pointed out that activists of KCP (MTF) Sunil Meetei group might have performed the attack at the residence of its president, Dr Nimaichand Luwang at Yairipok Bishnunaha.
A threat on Luwang and his party was first received over telephone when he assumed office of the president two years back in 2009.It was followed by sending a SMS.
Since then, he had been urging the Chief Secretary to provide security.
On October 22 of the same year, 2009, he had also approached the DGP on the same matter.
Meanwhile, he again started receiving threats from the KCP (MTF) Sunil Meetei group.
The first threat was received on January 8 of this year asking him to expel former Union minister Th Chaoba from the party.
The group threatened him that his party, MPP, will be eliminated if he refused to abide by the diktat of the KCP(MTF).
The UG group once again reminded their warning on February 2.That time, they asked to expel party general secretary Ibomcha as well.
If their order was not abided by, they threatened to kill him or if they were unable to do so, the party would be taught a lesson in the forthcoming Assembly election, Nimaichand Luwang had retorted that it is upto the party to expel a member or members of the party.
Expelling a member(s) on the diktat of an outlaw group, will be treated as having a nexus with outlaw groups and the Election Commission of India can derecognized the party, Nimaichand had observed.
Nimaichand said with regard to the issue, he along with O Joy had an audience with Governor on February 18.The Governor had asked ADGP V Zathang to take up necessary action to provide security to him.
The matter was raised again after the DGP returned from tour who assured of tabling the matter in a security committee meeting but he was only deputed four unarmed police personnel.
He said he was explained that security guards could be used only in the Imphal Municipality area.
Party leader, O Joy alleged the Congress of trying to weaken other political parties, particularly the oldest regional party in Manipur, MPP, so as to prevent them from coming to power.
If the government failed to take up necessary action, the party will put up the matter to the notice of the Union Home Ministry, he added.
Former Union minister and advisor of MPP, Th Chaoba, who was also present at the press conference, said that the KCP (MTF) Sunil group had charged him of setting up armed gangs.
However, he clarified that he had explained to the UG group all matters on the charges they had levelled on him.
