Market shed at Singjamei bazar collapses, vendors escape unhurt

Imphal, September 27 2010: Vegetable vendors at a market shed in Singjamei Bazar today ran helter skelter in panic when the roof of the shed they were in collapsed.

No one was reported injured.

The RCC roof of around eight feet length at old market shed no.1 collapsed after the weak pillars wore down naturally.

The RCC roof plate collapsed around 9.30 am today when people started crowding the market to buy goods.

The collapse continued till 10.30 am.

Vendors of the market shed, mostly women who detected breaking pillars, ran out leaving their wares before the roof actually collapsed.

A chaotic scene ensued as people ran in all directions in panic.

The 20 year old market shed was constructed in 1989-90 by the Planning and Development Authority (PDA).

Vendors and people there blamed that the shed collapsed because of lack of quality control at the time of construction.

Not only shed no.1 that collapsed today, conditions of pillars of other sheds at the adjoining area have also started to break down.

Many vendors had already abandoned their lots due to fear of a collapse.

Vendors who were still storing their wares in the sheds have started to take out their wares as a precautionary measure.

Two sheds had already collapsed two months back.

But the authority refused to repair or dismantle the market sheds in spite of vendors pleading the authority concern to take up necessary action, the vendors said.
