Imphal, May 22 2009:
The Democratic Students' Alliance of Manipur (DESAM) today held the Engineering Cell of Manipur University responsible for the leaks/cracks that appear in the ceilings of the recently inaugurated Anthropology department building of MU while warning to demolish the entire building structure if the cracks are not mended within May.
Addressing media persons today at the DESAM head office located at Keishampat, Education secretary of DESAM, A Thoithoi said that the ground floor of the Anthropology department building which was inaugurated as recent as December last year is not balanced.
Apart from this, the tiles of the ceiling on the first floor have begun breaking.
Thoithoi further alleged that since the pipes used for the water tap have been of low quality, water mixed with rust in red colour used to flow for around two minutes while using it.
He also said that water leaked in from the roof of the second floor when rain falls making the ceilings and the building more vulnerable.
Holding the MU's Engineering Cell for the flaws, Thoithoi said that the construction works were not executed with much consideration for the welfare and development of the students but to meet the selfish ends of drawing the bills.
He said the University authority has to take action for the defects without any bias while also urging all contractors and workers to carry out their works sincerely in the interest of the students.
Thoithoi further appeals all underground organisations not to demand percentage in any work related to the construction of educational institutions in a show of respect and cooperation to the students' body's campaign to make education a free zone.
