Workshop on fresh vegetable and fruits packaging

A One-day Training cum Demonstration Workshop for Micro, Small and Medium Entrepreneurs on Packaging of Fresh Fruits and Vegetables will be held tomorrow at Classic Hotel.
Speaking about the workshop at a press meet held at the Manipur Press Club, Imphal, GB Reddy, Joint Director, Indian Institute of Packaging (IIP), Chennai said that proper packaging not only preserve the quality of the product but it also attracts the attention of consumers.
He said that the workshop is being organised with an aim to create awareness to the micro, small and medium entrepreneurs of the state who are actively involving in food preservation and production industries.
He urged the people of the state to attend the workshop.
The Indian Institute of Packaging (IIP) was established in 1966 under the Ministry of Commerce and Industries, Government of India.
The Headquarter stationed in Mumbai, the institute has its regional offices in Chennai, Delhi, Hyderabad and Kolkata.
India is the second largest food producers in the world with China on the top.
However 40 percent of the food production is wasted either in storage or improper packaging.
A regional office will be set up in Guwahati very soon, he assured.
Professor Dr Jyoti Baliga, IIP Mumbai said that Manipur is a highly potential state in the field of agriculture.
Unfortunately the rich produces of the state are being waste due to lack of proper packaging and marketing.
Packaging is a very important and useful means of food preservation.
N Santa, Chairman, Manipur Finance and Business Limited said that his company is planning to set up a packaging unit in the state which will help in preserving the vegetable and fruit produces of the state.
The setting up of the unit will cost about Rs 60 lakhs to Rs 1 crore.
Bipin Das,Deputy Director, IIP Kolkata and Haridas, Assistant Director, MSME Imphal also attended the press meet.
