Imphal, November 10 2010:
The Kabui Mothers' Association, Manipur has also called a statewide general strike on November 12 on which Sonia Gandhi is scheduled to visit the state in order to protest against government's failure to fulfill their demands.
The association is demanding allotment of 200 vendor seats at the newly constructed three-multi-storey market-sheds.
Alleging that government has not considered their demand, they called the 10-hour general strike which would be effective from 6 am of the day till 4 pm.
Addressing media persons at a press conference at the office of the Zeliangrong Union, Kakhulong, KAMA president Kakomlunglu Kamei recalled that the association had submitted a memorandum to the Chief Minister to allot at least 200 vendor seats for Kabui women vendors and lamented that it has not been fulfilled by the government.
Regarding the demand, they had also called on the Chief Minister after he invited them for talks on October 27.But the matter could be settled.
After they warned of calling a general strike on the day of Sonia's visit to the state on October 30 through the media, Kabui womenfolk had staged a sit-in protest to register their protest against the government's apathy to their demand.
In reply to a question raised by reporters, Kakomlunglu said that around 10 Kabui women occupied seats at the erstwhile women's market before they were dismantled.
However, she had no idea whether they were IMC licence holders or not.
To another question of why KAMA has restricted their demand only for Kabui women when there are more than 35 tribes in the state, she replied that the association is demanding only for the Kabui and it is upto other communities to demand for the same.
