Contrasting claims dog woman's death

Even as several organisations have been observing International Fortnight on Crime Against Women, a pregnant woman has died under controversial circumstances.
Whereas maternal families of the deceased woman who was eight months pregnant have been alleging that the woman was killed by her husband, the husband's family contended that the woman died on the way to Thoubal district hospital after she was found hanging by herself.
The incident happened at Thoubal Ningombam in the house of Ningombam Muhindro last night.
According to information culled from the spot, Niranjoy (27) s/o Ng Muhindro and his wife Dhanamanjuri (24) were heard quarrelling at about 6 pm yesterday.
Moments later, Dhanamanjuri was heard crying to spare her.
However, according to a statement given to police by Niranjoy's father, Niranjoy went out when his mother called him to dinner last night.
The mother also called her daughter-in-law but there was no response.
As she went out from kitchen, Dhanamanjuri was found hanging in the corridor.
She was immediately put down with the help of neighbouring people and rushed to hospital.
It was suspected that Niranjoy and Dhanamanjuri had some disputes over Niranjoy having an affair with another girl.
Dhanamanjuri left behind a four year old son.
Niranjoy is a Constable in Manipur Police and is presently posted at Wangjing outpost.
He has been picked up by Thoubal Police while the corpse of Dhanamanjuri has been deposited in JNIMS mortuary.
Enraged by the controversial death of Dhanamanjuri, a mob attacked the house of Niranjoy but police cordoned off the house and thwarted their attempt.
Police even opened fire in the air in addition to firing tear gas shells to drive away the mob.
Later, a public meeting was held at Thoubal Ningombam Laxmi bazar community hall and resolved to form a joint action committee.
Contending that the death of Dhanamanjuri was not a case of suicide, the meeting resolved that the Government should book the culprit(s) at the earliest.
Other resolutions adopted at the meeting included banishment of Niranjoy and his family from the locality, video coverage of the entire post mortem process of Dhanamanjuri's body, presence of a Magistrate and JAC members during the post mortem process.
It further decided to launch various modes of agitation together with local clubs, Meira Paibis and civil society organisations in case the Government fails to book the culprits.
JAC convenor Waikhom Mohindro said that memorandum has been submitted to the Chief Minister today in connection with the controversial death of Dhanamanjuri.
The JAC has also asked the Thoubal Additional SP to conduct an enquiry into the death of Dhanamanjuri.
