The death toll in the indiscriminate firing by unidentified persons at North AOC area on December 31, 2005 has risen to two even as another victim is struggling for life at the hospital.
Agriculture Officer Simthar Tangkhul (60) of Somdal and staying at New Checkon Tribal colony Government quarters died at the spot while Loitongbam Govind (30) s/o L Gopimohon of Wangkhei Tokpam Leikai passed away at JN Hospital at around 1 am yesterday.
Another victim identified as Ashangbam Langamba (25) s/o Tomba of Wangkhei Khunou, who sustained bullet injuries is still being kept under medical observation at Shija Hospital.
His condition is stated to be critical.
According to report, Langamba is an auto-rickshaw driver.
Simthar came along with his daughter to receive his son-in-law who was to arrive from New Delhi.
The daughter was inside the auto-rickshaw while Langamba, Simthar and Govind, were warming themselves over the fire when four armed persons wearing overcoat suddenly appeared and fired indiscriminately towards them.
Simthar was hit by bullets all over his body and died on the spot while Govind was rushed to the JN hospital, Porompat where he later passed away.
Langamba, who is currently undergoing treatment at Shija Hospital, sustained bullet injuries on his left foot and left side of the buttock which pierced through affecting his private part.
The body was Simthar has been taken by his family members for the last rites to his native Somdal yesterday itself but the body of Govind was handed over to family members after a post-mortem at RIMS morgue today.
Govind is reported to be a National player in canoeing.
Trader shot dead: Unidentified persons shot dead a non-Manipuri betel leave trader at a spot in between Ukhongshang and Salungpham, 7 kms south of Yairipok Police Station under Thoubal district.
The body was recovered at around 11 am today.
It is believed that the deceased might be one Lalan Bihari (40) who was staying in a rented room at Yairipok.
