Imphal, October 16 2008:
Along with completion of the delimitation process and the expiry of the term of the Autonomous District Council Delimitation Commission, which was set up for the purpose, yesterday, the recommendations of the Commission would be submitted to the Government within October 22, an official source of the Delimitation Commission has informed.
The source further informed that the Government would be seeking suggestions and advises of public leaders and political parties on the recommendations of the Commission, and if required, necessary rectifications would be made before taking a final decision.
The Autonomous District Council Act was enacted on March 7, 1972 .
After holding the election in 1984 in accordance with the provisions of the Act, no further election of the District Council had been ever held.
The delimitation process had been taken up to ensure the election of the District Councils.
In carrying out the delimitation process, Tamenglong district turned out to be the most problematic district while the process was completed without any hassle in Churachandpur district.
Maintaining that the delimitation process had been conducted with due consultations and suggestions of the Deputy Commissioners and public leaders of the districts concerned, the source, however, disclosed that there are some disputes over the boundary of the districts which are yet to be resolved.
A meeting of the Commission was convened yesterday to discuss this issue and necessary instructions had been given to all concerned to resolve the existing boundary disputes within the next couple of days, the source added.
The delimitation of the District Councils had been carried out on the basis of the Electoral Roll published on August 31 this year.
Earlier there used to be 18 Constituencies under each District Council but now the number of Constituencies would be increased to 24 each.
Consequently, with inclusion of the two Government nominees, the number of members in each District Council will be 26 .
