Imphal, January 24 2013:
Superintendent of Jail I K Muivah has asserted that Laikhuram Rojit Singh (28), who has been lodged in Sajiwa Central Jail at Khabeisoi in connection with the rape of U-morok seller, is fine with a medical team looking after him with special attention and his mother's claim that Rojit is severely ill and the allegation that jail authority is neglecting her son is just a ploy to get him out of bail on medical ground.
Speaking to media persons at his Sajiwa Central Jail office today, Muivah pointed out that after being arrested in connection with the infamous rape case, Rojit was lodged in Sajiwa Central Jail on 27th March, 2012.He was the Commander of Sajiwa Central Jail's Sector 7 looking after around 120 fellow prisoners till November 2012 .
However, after he complained of pain on his backbone allegedly from a misplaced spinal cord disk suddenly in December 2012, the medical team of the jail comprising 4 doctors and 8 nurses have been looking after him round the clock and administering medication prescribed by doctors from JNIMS.
During the last 3 (three) months of his illness, jail authority has taken him to JNIMS for 7 (seven) times for medical treatment and check-up apart from conducting medical check-up by jail doctors inside the Prison Medical Ward for more than 30 times.
So, there is no question of Jail authority being bias and discriminating anyone, the SP said, adding that jail authority would not have taken Rojit to the hospital for treatment if it has been discriminatory towards any of the prisoners.
He informed that jail authority has only Rs 4 lakh as annual fund for medical purposes and it has spent few thousands on the treatment of Rojit alone.
If any of the prisoners want better treatment, they can do so, and jail authority would reimburse all the expenses.
The Jail SP further informed that Rojit is the owner of the firm manufacturing the mineral water bottles which goes by the name of Silver Dew and so he must be have enough influence at the higher levels and her mother's accusation against jail authority of not taking proper medical care for her son is completely baseless.
It is nothing but a ploy to get out her son on bail on medical ground.
"Our duty is to look after prisoners properly and ensure their safety.
Such baseless accusations won't do anything good either to the Rojit's family or the jail authority.
The decision to release him or not is not in my hands, it is upto the law court", Muivah added.
