International Mother Language Day observed

As observed throughout the world, the International Mother Language Day was also observed in different parts of state by various organizations and government agencies.
The Jawaharlal Nehru Manipur Dance Academy (JNMDA) and Sahitya Thoupang Lup jointly observed the International Mother Language Day at the auditorium of JNMDA today.
Speaking on the occasion, Ratan Thiyam, renowned theatre personality said that due to mixing up of Manipuri language with modern slangs, the flavor and originality of Manipuri language has lost.
In the wake of globalization, questions have been raised over the fate of human languages and there is apprehension that languages of large communities would only prevail and that of the small communities would die away, Ratan observed.
Dilip Mayengbam, Director, JNMDA was also present and spoke on the occasion.
As part of the observance, a Kabi Shammelan held.
It was participated by around 80 poets.
The International Mother Language Day was also organised jointly by Research Forum Manipur, SCERT and Manipuri Department of Manipur University at Manipur Press Club today.
Speaking on the occasion, RK Tarunjit, Joint Editor of Marup, a journal published in Tripura, informed that there are around 15,000 Manipuris settling in Tripura.
But extent of using Manipuri language in conversing among themselves has considerably come down due to influences of outside culture and language.
Today, many of the Manipuris settling in Tripura could not speak Manipuri and they do not understand their own culture and traditions.
The functijon was graced by Prof L Lokendro, Registrar, MU, Mutua Bahadur, President, Research Forum Manipur, P Gunindro, HOD, Manipuri Department, MU and A Romen, Lecturer, SCERT as presidium members.
