'Catalogue medicinal plants'

Imphal, May 11 2011:
There is need to document traditional medicinal plants available in Manipur since there is apprehension of their vanishing, said Prof HNK Sharma, Vice Chancellor of Manipur University speaking at the inaugural function of the training programme of field investigators of local health traditions today.
He observed that documentation of traditional medicinal plants is not up to date in the state.
There is need for consultation with experts in this field so that traditional medicinal plants available in the state could be preserved.
Many medicinal plants grow in the state.
A thorough study of these plants is needed, he said asserting that once 'tera paibi' was used to stop bleeding.
Manahi was also used to treat teeth infection.
The training programme was co-organised by Centre for Advance Study in Life Science, MU, North Eastern Institute of Folk Medicine, Arunachal Pradesh and Centre for Local Health Tradition, Institute of Ayurveda and Investigative Medicine, Bangalore.
Director of North Eastern Institute of Folk Medicine, Arunachal Pradesh, Otem Thai attended the function as guest of honour.
He said that medicinal plants are grown in plenty in the Northeastern region.
Knowing this, The centre is considering setting up a institute for study in medicinal plants in the region.
The inaugural function was presided over by Prof M Shyamkesho.
Assistant Director of Institute of Ayurveda and Investigative Medicine, Bangalore, G Harirama Murthi attended as guests of honour.
