Imphal, July 17 2010:
Demanding remedial measures for various problems of Kakching Khunou College such as shortage of teachers and inadequate infrastructure at the earliest, students of the college have threatened to launch various mode of agitation together with the local people.
Located at Umathel village under Sugnu constituency, about 65 Kms away from Imphal, Kakching Khunou College has about 700 students belonging to different villages between Wabagai and Sajik Tampak.
Though the college was established in 1981, it has no regular Principal since a long time back.
The students have also been enduring all kinds of inconveniences due to poor infrastructure.
Speaking to media persons at Manipur Press Club here today, secretary general of the Kakching Khunou Students' Union Oinam Shital observed that condition of the college where majority of the students belong to economically backward class has deteriorated to a pathetic level.
In addition to dilapidated condition of the college building, the existing class rooms are not adequate compared to the total strength of students.
Ironically, the library has no space for reading.
The post of the Librarian is also lying vacant since retirement of a last librarian.
Scientific equipment available in the laboratory are also quite outdated and inadequate.
There are only two or three microscopes.
There is neither compound fencing nor reservoir for potable water.
Even though the college is a co-educational institute, there are no separate toilets for boys and girls.
Rather than making up the teaching staff which is short of the required strength, additional five posts of teachers have been lying vacant after the teachers retired from service last year, Shital lamented.
Stating that semester system is being introduced from the current academic session, the secretary appealed to authorities concerned to appoint adequate number of teachers.
