Responding to the theme "Your planet needs you, unite to combat climate change", a free smoke emission and noise pollution check-up of vehicles was conducted by Manipur Pollution Control Board (MPCB) Tuesday in front of the Indira Gandhi Children Park near the Manipur Legislative Assembly and in front the Western Gate of Kangla Fort respectively in connection with the "World Environment Day 2009" .
E Dwijamani, MLA and chairman of MPCB, speaking to NNN on the spot of the check-up stated the board has been carrying out various activities since June 5 onwards in connection with the World Environment Day 2009, such as conducting awareness programs, planting trees, and installation of water quality monitoring stations in different parts of the state.
The campaign and activities to save the environment will go on till Jun 15, the MPCB Chairman said.
Second-hand diesel jeeps were found to emit smoke above the normal level of smoke emission in the check-up, the chairman of MPCB disclosed.
He appealed to the people help fight climate change which is a global issue, by reducing pollution and by planting trees.
