Imphal, April 27 2010:
Inspite of expectations that import-export of goods at the Moreh Town is in terms of crores of rupees on an average day and involves several individuals, an official team of Income Tax department literally stumbled upon a shocking revelation today that there are only seven legal traders on the Indian side of the international border.
The official team led by Commissioner of Income Tax BP Meena (IRS), whose jurisdiction covers Manipur, Nagaland and Assam's Jorhat, Sibsagar, Golaghat and Karbianglong districts also included Additional Commissioner of Income Tax (Imphal Range) LD Mate (IRS) and Assistant Commissioner of Income tax (Imphal Circle) NG Joseph Gangte, and other staff of Income Tax Office, Imphal.

An informed source said, over 100 traders were involved in the trans-border trade at the beginning of the millennium which in subsequent years has tickled down to only seven legal traders, thereby triggering suspicion of the visiting officials that trade activities are being sustained in an illegal way as there is hardly any visible reduction in the transportation of imported goods through the border town.
Moreover, the source said during the 2007-08 period, export of Indian goods had tipped the 60.2 million INR mark while import from across the border reached 162.9 million INR thereby generating substantial income to the Government.
However, as the income generated through the border trade declined since some years back there raised strong suspicion that illegal trade activities strive, consequently resulting in the official team's visit for a spot inspection.
apart from the officials surveying business establishments in Moreh and having discussions with Customs officials, BP Meena reportedly instructed Moreh-based Income Tax officials to present status report on those who (traders) have ceased filing of income tax.
