Imphal, July 13 2010:
As long as atrocities are committed on the innocent people, Apunba Lup would continue to work fearlessly for the cause of justice, co-ordinator of the Working Committee of the Apunba Lup, Sunil Karam has stated on the occasion of its 6th foundation day today.
The foundation day function was held at Manipur Press Club here with co-ordinators of the Apunba Lup Phulindro Konsam, Ayekpam Langdon and Sunil Karam as presidium members.
Those who spoke at the occasion came out strongly against the atrocities being committed on the people of Manipur both by the State and non-State actors and stressed on the need for strengthening the Apunba Lup.
In his address, Sunil Karam observed that State actors as well as non-State actors have been committing various atrocities on the people in Manipur.
Non-State actors have been indulging in extortion, triggering bomb blasts or planting bombs.
In protest against such activities, Wakat Meephams are being witnessed at every nook and corner of the State.
However, such localised protest demonstrations have started posing a threat on the collective strength of the people.
While appealing to the non-State actors to restrain from atrocities against the innocent people, he also pointed out that no UG would be able to survive by antagonising and earning the wrath of the people.
Maintaining that numerous public movement spearheaded by the Apunba Lup with the support of the people have succeeded in the past Sunil acknowledged that it is because of the support and co-operation of the people that Apunba lup has been able to come so far and take firm stand against atrocities in the society.
It may be noted here that the Working Committee of the Apunba Lup has come into existence after the incident in which Thangjam Monorama of Bamon Kampu was found dead after having arrested from her house by the 17 Assam Rifles personnel on July 11, 2008 .
Delivering his presidential address, Phulindro Konsam pointed out it for the court to decide on what kind of punishment should be given to an accused person who has been found guilty after proper trial.
So, armed persons should arbitrary killing of people just by framing up some charges.
The Apunba Lup would continue to oppose such killings in the future as well.
Speaking as one of the invitees, lecturer in Political Science, Manipur University Dhanabir Laishram pointed out that although there has been public co-operation in any movement spearheaded by the Apunba lup, there seems to be lack of proper co-ordination.
So, special stress should be given on the co-ordination aspect of launching any public movement in future.
AMUCO president KT Rahaman recalled that subsequent to the mass public movement spearheaded by Apunba Lup, Assam Rifles have been removed from sacred Kangla and impostion of Armed Forces Special Powers Act lifted from seven Assembly segments under Imphal Municipality.
Human rights activist Ibotombi Khuman said that people in Manipur are today afraid of both the State actors and the non-State actors.
The atrocties committed both by the State and non-State actors have been the rise.
Once the tolerance limit of the people is crossed, public may raise war cry against the two.
It would be better for the two parties to realise this fact and sonner the better.
