Imphal, July 17 2010:
The State Public Works Department entrusted to develop Imphal-Jiribam section of NH 53 has finally launched the repairing in full gear.
Despite heavy and incessant rainfall, the PWD hired seven contractors and works allotted to them after dividing worst dilapidated sections between Khongshang and Keimai into seven portions.
The contractors have also taken up their assigned tasks.
A PWD official who reached Jiribam today informed The Sangai Express that PWD engineers have been monitoring the repairing work being executed by the seven contractors.

A team of PWD engineers who left Imphal yesterday reached Jiribam today after supervising the road repairing work at different sections of the highway.
The official informed that normally cutting of hill slopes should be done between 45 degree and 50 degree.
Frequent landslides caused by heavy rainfall on NH 53 was largely a result of cutting hill-sides at a very steep angle, close to 90 degree.
Even as the State Government has been lobbying hard with the Prime Minister and the relevant Ministry to take over Imphal-Jiribam highway, the same section of NH 53 is currently under BRO.
Yet, the BRO is no longer taking their responsibility of repairing the road.
The BRO has steadfastly refused to clear landslides even from a single spot, conveyed the official.
Notably, the BRO has already explained about fund paucity and man-power shortage as published in this daily.
On account of heavy downpour, there are at least 20 landslide spots between Nung Dalan and Kaimai till today.
Nevertheless, vehicular movement has been continuing somehow.
Claiming that the repairing work has been going on in full swing, the official exuded confidence that condition can be improved to noticeable stage after ten days.
PWD has already estimated that repairing the highway to the minimum motorable level in the first phase would cost Rs 25 crores.
The first phase of the highway development does not include black-topping.
To develop the Imphal-Jiribam highway at tip-top level it would require around Rs 225 crores.
Consequent upon its resolution to develop the highway as a standard road, the State Government is determined to develop the highway by deducting 10 per cent from the annual plan amount in case the Centre refuses to sanction the required amount for repairing and developing Imphal-Jiribam highway.
