Imphal, September 09 2012:
Taking strong exception to use of non-Manipuri words by media houses in Manipur, Kangla, a Facebook community page, has urged All Manipur Working Journalists' Union (AMWJU) to use our own native words instead of other people's.Issuing a message, members of Kangla, said that people of Manipur acknowledge the contributions made by various media houses in Manipur for bring about social and cultural integrity.
However, it is sad to note that as a custom, most print media (newspapers and journals in Manipuri in Bengali script and Meitei Mayek) and electronic media usually employ words from Bengali, Urdu, Hindi, and Sanskrit while reporting.
To preserve the identity of Manipuri culture and language, use of words from other people's languages should be stopped.
Instead of using words like Shanti, Samaj, Sarkar, Khabar, Khabar kagaj, Kala Sanskriti we can use our own Manipuri words like Tangdu leitaba/Ing chikna, Khunai, Leingaklon, Pao, Paoche, and Enatki Oiba Thouram respectively, the message pointed out.
