Imphal, November 04 2010:
With the SPF Cabinet finally giving its nod to the demand to extend the retirement age of of Government college lecturers to 62 years, Manipur has become the second State among 19 States where the scheme is to be implemented, the first being Mizoram.
A meeting of the Cabinet held today with Chief Minister O Ibobi Singh today morning gave its approval to the recommendation to extend the retirement age of Government college lecturers to 62 years.
In connection with the Cabinet decision, a Cabinet Minister of the SPF Government explained that approval has been given to extension of age of superannuation of the Government college teachers to 62 as majority of the senior lecturers currently working in Government colleges are due to retire next February and the newly appointed lecturers would not be in a position to carry forward the newly introduced education system successfully.
In addition to extension of age of retirement of the college lecturers, the Cabinet has also given its approval to implementation of UGC pay scale for the college lecturers.
However, with regard to allowance, the existing State norms will continue.
Moreover, the Cabinet approved extending the age of superannuation for other Government employees from 59 to 60, the source informed, adding that the Cabinet meeting, however, did not discuss issues related to payment of arrears.
To generate more income for the Government, today's Cabinet meeting decided that more excise duty would be levied on the liquors being supplied to the Military and Para-Military forces, the source added.
