A post office branch to be functioned at Nungkao in Tamenglong district, the village where Rani Gaidinliu was born and breathed her last, was opened in a formal function held at the Postal Recreation Club of Imphal Head Post Office today.
The post office branch was open to mark a respect to Rani Gaidinliu who fought against the anti-people policies of the then British rule and Central government, said officials of the postal service taking part in the inaugural function of the branch office.
The opening of post office branch at Nungkao village was the second time in which the Post Office dedicated for the woman who struggled for social justice, they added recalling that a one rupee stamp of Rani Gaidinliu had also ready released in 1993 .
Post Master General NE Circle, Shillong, Milgrate Lawphaniew graced the inaugural function as chief guest which was presided over by Postal Service Manipur director Som Kamei presided over.
Tribal Development Commissioner, LP Gonmei attended as guest of honour.
In his speech as chief guest Milgrate said that since the introduction of payment of wages of MGNREGS workers through accounts opened in the post office, Manipur has became the highest number of people opening account with the post office in the northeastern region.
In the last three year, accounts amounting to Rs 63 crore opened with the post branches across the country, he said.
Nungkao village is the birth place of well known freedom fighter of the country late Rani Gaidinliu (1915-1993) said M Iawphniaw while addressing the people adding that the village is inhabited by about 1300 people of the Zaliangrong tribes.
