Imphal, November 07 2011:
Palace Compound locals today resorted to burning of debris and other inflammable items to protest the Government's lack of initiative to complete the road repairing/development work of Govindajee Road.
The road stretch from Palace Compound upto Brahmapur, popularly called Govindajee Road, had been left in a deplorable condition due to negligence by the contractor concerned, said secretary of Organisation for Better Society Ch Robede, who also declared that the road will remain close till concrete measure is initiated to complete the road repairing work.
Pointing to scattered stone chips/boulders through the length of the dusty road, the secretary said the local residents had been exposed to health hazards since March.
The road stretch not only serves as an important diversionary route whenever the Imphal-Moreh route in the Moirangkhom to General Post Office section is blocked to traffic for important events, but the same is frequented by many due to location of the Govindajee Temple, BOAT and Hapta Kangjeibung, where public events are held, as well as various offices in Palace Compound area.
