Attempt by Ningombam residents to calm down an altercation between two groups has resulted in one of the locals being shot and suffering multiple bullet wounds on both the thighs.
The injured person identified as Akoijam Roshan (25) s/o A Mani of ningombam Mayai Leikai is presently undergoing treatment at Shija Hospital.
According to a police report, the incident took place at around 8.30 pm yesterday near Vale Academy, Tulihal Airport line when some youths in two wheelers were stopped by unidentified persons who came in a Maruti Van.
It is said that on seeing the two groups pushing and shoving one another, Ningombam locals rushed out from their home to intervene.
However, one from among quarrelling group opened fire and fled away in the Maruti Van leaving Roshan bleeding on the spot.
Even though identities of the Maruti Van occupants numbering about 5 could not be confirmed some locals claimed that they had identified themselves as 'civil police commandos' who shadowed the other group in two wheelers.
Three held:Troops of 12 Maratha Light Infantry and 29 Assam Rifles have reportedly arrested three underground activists from Imphal West and Chandel district areas yesterday.
A PRO IGAR (S) release said, the MLI troops netted two KCP (MC) cadres at around 9.30 am when search operations were launched at Paobitek Mayai Leikai area of Imphal West district.
The arrested duo identified as K Ibungo Singh (31) s/o K Yaima Singh of Paobitek Mayai Leikai and Mayangmayum Abdul Jabbar alias Nahapik (45) s/o (L) Abdulla of Paobitek have been handed over to Mayang Imphal police station, the release said.
The other arrest was effected by 29 AR troops deployed at Sita Track Junction of NH-39 at around mid-noon yesterday.
It is said that the troops intercepted a suspect from a Tata Sumo (MN04A/2256) which was coming from Moreh and bound for Wangjing.
During interrogation of the individual it came to light that he was an overground worker of the PLA organisation working as Project Officer of the outfit, the PRO maintained and identified the captive as Okram Jaspin alias Biju Singh (23) s/o O Sarat Chandra of Wangjing Heituppokpi under Thoubal police station.
Jaspin has been handed over to Imphal West police station, the PRO informed.
Meanwhile, Imphal East district police commandos arrested a KCP cadre from Thambalkhong bridge at around 9.30 am yesterday and have recovered one 9 mm pistol along with a magazine and two live rounds from the possession of the individual.
A statement issued today by the SP (IE) Th Radheshyam Singh identified the arrested person as RK Naocha alias Somokanta Singh (20) s/o (L) RK Sanatomba Singh of Kongba Laishram Leikai.
Naocha is informed to have revealed that he joined the KCP organisation in March this year through one S/S chairman Tamnganba alias Loya and had been involved in extortion of money from the general public, Govt officials, businessmen, etc.
Naocha was also involved in transportation of arms and ammunition from one place to another, the SP added.
