Imphal, May 18 2013 :
Vitiligo, a common pigmentary disorder of the skin also widely known as Leucoderma, is neither infectious nor has any similarity whatever with Leprosy, according to Dr Karam Lokendro, Manipur State Branch President of Indian Association of Dermatologists, Venereologist and Leprologist (IADVL) .
He was speaking during the Vitiligo Day observance programme at the Conference Hall of Hotel Imphal today.
Dr Lokendro said that persons affected by Vitiligo should not be stigmatised while pointing out that there are some persons affected with the skin disease who do not socialise due to self, social and emotional stigmatization.
He said there are some who even went to take the extreme step of committing suicide.
Asserting that the disease is hundred percent curable with timely treatment, Dr Lokendro said all pigmentary disorders of the skin are not vitiligo.
Since the disease is not contagious, there is no threat to others and hence maintaining close contact and living together with infected persons is safe, he said.
He also said that vitiligo is neither hereditary nor a curse while adding that there is no dietary restriction for the infected persons.
Dr Lokendro suggested that the disease could be effectively treated with cosmetic camouflage of the white patch or undergoing a surgery.
