Imphal, June 27:
Taking serious note of the fast expanding growth of phumdis (floating bio-mass) and the reciprocal shrinking of water mass (surface) in one of the largest fresh water lake of the country Loktak lake, phumdi clean up exercise is now going on in full swing.
The Loktak Development Authority (LDA) has already been removing phumdis in parts of the Loktak lake neighbouring Bishnupur, Ningthoukhong, Thanga, Moirang etc.
The similar phumdi cleaning up exercise has also been taken up on Mayang Imphal side under the initiative of MLA Dr Kh Ratankumar who is also a member of the Loktak Development Authority (LDA).
LDA Executive Engineer A Kumarjit and some LDA staff personally inspected removal of thick phumdis by their owners at Khonapat or Yumnam Leirak of Phoubakchao today.
In an effort to persuade villagers against rearing thick phumdis, MLA Ratankumar provided Rs 13,000 each to six selected villagers, three each from Phoubakchao ward no I and II so that they can seek other sources of earning their livelihood by procuring fishnets etc.
MLA Ratankumar also inspected renovation work of PWD inspection bungalow located at Komlakhong Chingthi.
The legislator was dismayed at seeing that ceiling and kitchen were not included in the renovation work.
