Student bodies demand release of arrested DESAM members

Students of Ananda Singh Higher Secondary School and Ibotonsana Higher Secondary School today staged a sit-in protest condemning the arrest of 16 executives of DESAM by the police.
Stating teachers should be trained to maintain moral ethics inside the classroom, the students said intense agitation will be initiated if the State Government does not release the arrested executives within 24 hours.
Students' Unions of DM College of Commerce and Arts in a statement have vehemently condemned the detention of 16 executives of DESAM by the police and urged the State Government to release them at the earliest.
A teacher with no knowledge of Right to Education is not fit to impart education to students in any educational institution, said the statement.
The All Manipur Muslim Students' Organisation (AMMSO) and Ghanapriya Women's College Students' Union have also urged the State Government to release the arrested members of DESAM and said the organisation will endorse all the agitation of DESAM regarding the matter.
All India Students' Federation (AISF), Manipur State Council in a statement has appealed to the State Government to resolve the matter at the earliest considering the students' academic atmosphere.
In the meantime, as per the reported news of the offence allegedly committed by Gurumayum Rupachandra Sharma against the student, the District Child Protection Officer, Imphal West has today directed the Special Juvenile Police Unit (SJPU), Lamphel police station to investigate the case and submit a report of the same to the Juvenile Justice Board, Imphal West, Takyelpat on or before June 26 .
