Dimapur, October 15 2009:
A ManipuR-bound goods truck (MN 01 5878) met with a fatal accident at the Patkai Bridge, Chumukedima, on Tuesday night at around 10:00pm.Traffic policemen said that there were two occupants in the truck.
The handyman, identified as one Kumar Upati, s/o Purma Prasad, succumbed to his injuries at the Christian Institute of Health Sciences & Research, Dimapur.
The driver, one Gopal Kimari, s/o Yamnath, is said to be in serious condition and now admitted at CIHSR.
Both are said to be hailing from Turibari village in Kangpokpi, Senapati, Manipur.
The truck loaded with foodgrains was headed for Imphal from Dimapur.
It plunged around 100 feet into the boulder strewn Chathe River bank from over the Patkai Bridge.
It is assumed that the driver lost control of the vehicle as it made the turn towards the bridge and tossed over the railing on the right side, plunging over into the river below.
Traffic police suspect that the ill-fated truck was at a full speed at the time of the accident.
The bridge suffered no major damage except for a bit of the top of the railing over which the truck flipped over.
