Taking serious note of the sale of helmets on the road side 'which does not meet the minimum standard required for safety of the wearer,' the DSP of Traffic police has urged the public to check the quality of the helmets while buying them.
In a statement, the police officer said that helmets by 'virtue of its shape, material and construction, could reasonably be expected to afford to the persons driving or riding a motor cycle a degree of protection from injury from injury in the event of accident; and it should always be securely fastened to the head of the wearer by means of straps or other fastenings provided on the head-gears.' The police officer further said that the drive is being taken up to ensure the safety of two wheeler riders, reduce fatality in accidents and sought the co-operation of the public to adhere to the existing rules and regulations under the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988 .
