Imphal, April 04 2010:
Alleging negligence by medical practitioner, a protest demonstration was staged today in front of private clinic where an expectant woman died before delivery resulting in the still-born of her child.
The victim woman has been identified as one Keisham Ongbi Soni Devi (23) w/o Sundarjit of Wabagai Thingel Leikai in Thoubal district.
In connection with dead of the expectant mother, a body called 'JAC Against the Criminal Attitude of Dr Chourajit' has been formed with a JAC team handing over a memorandum the Health Minister Ph parijat this evening.
The JAC representation demanded that a magisterial enquiry be ordered to establish veracity of the case; that Medical council of India terminate registration of Dr Chourajit for duty negligence; and that the doctor be removed from service.
The JAC team insisted that the demands' be translated into action within two days failing which intense agitation would be launched.
A copy of the memorandum has also been submitted to the Chief Minister.
Family members informed that a gynaecologist of Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences (JNIMS) asked Soni to report at the doctor's private clinic.
Naming the doctor as one Irom Chourajit of Kongpal Kongkham Leikai, the family members contended that ever since conceiving the child Soni had been consulting the same gynaecologist regularly.
On the doctor's advice, Soni was brought to JNIMS yesterday for delivery where Chourajit administered an injection and left.
The doctor reportedly conveyed to the patient party to admit her at Langol View Charitable Clinic which was complied with by taking Soni to the private clinic in the afternoon.
At about 5 pm, Soni was rolled to the labour room where Dr Chourajit administered another injection and left the clinic informing the patient party that he has some private work to attend.
Ironically, the consultant doctor showed up at the private clinic at around 10.30 pm only the break the news that both the mother and her unborn child could not be saved, the patient party maintained.
charging the doctor of gross negligence the victim's family members and relatives stormed at the private medical centre this morning but timely arrival of police averted possible violence.
even then the patient party shouted slogans against Dr Chourajit and demanded that appropriate punitive action be initiated against him.
Soni's husband has also lodged a complaint at Imphal police station demanding that the matter be investigated.
Meanwhile, a police source said the complaint has been entered in the GD Register and that no FIR case has been taken up.
