Stressing on systematic and long term sports policy, the State's chief Secretary Jarnail Singh is informed to have assured a delegation who called on him this afternoon that outstanding sportspersons would be accorded appropriate recognition for performances in their respective field.
The delegation briefed jarnail Singh in the backdrop of outcries from certain section of the sports fraternity over alleged partiality in extending job opportunities and promotion to some medal winners in the 33rd National Games.
During the deliberation over the issue which was detailed to the Chief Secretary by representatives of Manipur Olympic Association, Youth Affairs and Sports department and chef-de-mission of the 33rd National Games (Guwahati), jarnail is informed to have asked the delegates to provide relevant documents of gold medal winners in the said Games for in-depth consideration of the players' grievances.
According to a member of the delegation, who preferred anonymity, the Chief Secretary among other commitments to honour achievement of sportspersons of the State reportedly emphasised on providing jobs (fill up vacant posts) in the departments of Education, Social Welfare and other possible avenues based on merit (qualification) of players/athletes.
jarnail Singh also prevailed upon the delegation members to initiate necessary processes including chalking out criteria, draft a long term sports policy and provide details on those sports disciplines where winning multiple gold medal in a particular item and competition is impossible.
