Imphal, February 16, 2010:
A two day seminar on "Violence Against Women and Children" organised by the Action for Women and Rural Development (AWARD) has begun at Christian Damdei College, Motbung today.
Advisor of AWARD, Lhingzaniang, president of the governing body of the College Rev V Sitlhou and principal Seikholam Sitlhou and general secretary AWARD sat on the dais during the inaugural function.
In her key note address at the seminar, former MP, Kim Gangte said that despite the notion that women have equal rights and gender equality, the same has not materialised in the society till date.
Women are receiving many kinds of torture and harassment from their male counterpart.
What concerns more is that women too help in torturing and harassing women by men.
Women want to give birth to male child.
They are also involved in the celebration of giving birth to male child when they get themselves examined through Ultra Sound or any other means for sex detection.
When a man serves a woman (his wife), the society treats him as "Adhamora" and looks down upon him, even by the women, the former MP went on to say.
Rev V Sitlhou, speaking on the occasion, said that torture and harassment are the greatest challenges of the society.
The recent murder of a widow and her teenage daughter has showed the condition of the society.
