A three day workshop on "Traditional Salt Manufacture of Ningel" was opened today at Ningel Keithel under the joint aegis of the Indira Gandhi National Centre for Arts and the Manipur University Museum.
The opening function of the workshop was attended by Moirangthem Ibomcha, Padmasree Dr M Kirti and Pradhan M Radheshyam as presidium members.
In the opening seminar session moderated by Dr Kirti, Dr TB Singh presented a paper on the topic, "The Wonder World of Meitei Thum".
TB Singh said that the indigenous salt which has not only been an inevitable component of Manipuri diet but also closely associated with the culture and tradition of Manipur was also known as Noimu Thumpak Maingoubi.
He also traced the origin of the word thum and the folktales associated with it.
