Ukhrul, Aug 08:
For the people of Ukhrul, the slush and mud that pass off as the road running through the Town are daily inconvenience which they have to put up with.
And no, the problem is not about shortage of fund but about the same old story of the inability of utilizing the fund earmarked for development and repairing of the road.
Under the Additional central Assistance Project Programme of 2004-05, a sum of
Rs 1.25 crores was earmarked for Ukhrul Town but for the reasons best known to the authority concern the amount sanctioned by the Centre lapsed and the sorry condition of the road continues till this day.
The story does not end here for another Rs 26 lakhs which had been sanctioned under the Eastern Circular Road Project through the Additional Central Assistance for the term 2004-05 to develop and repair the 7.5 road of Ukhrul Town, however, here again, the slow pace of the work being taken up has left many fuming with rage as singling work is yet to be completed causing lot of inconveniences to the pedestrians.
Certainly, not amused with the absurd manner implementing the work, the local chairman of Ukhrul Town has come again and strongly against the contractor and authority concern over the pace of work.
A statement handed out to the public and the media persons by the chairman said in no uncertain term that through the work of the Eastern Circular Road project started 12 months back, in reality there is nothing to show that any work has been executed.
Houses were dismantled and many evicted to broaden the road but despite this, there is little to show that repairing and development work of the road has been taken up, the statement said, adding that no compensation had also been paid to the evicted persons.
Targeting the special contractor for the tardy progress of the work despite numerous appeals for completion of the road work before the rainy season, the statement said the contractor has been giving a deaf ear to all these appeals.
The stones and pebbles were laid without using any roller and 65% of shingling work are yet to be done, the statement said while questioning why the Public Works Department is not looking into the unfinished work.
