Imphal, April 03 2009:
Kshetrimayum Narayan, president of the Manipur University Students' Union (MUSU) was assaulted by activists of the DESAM inside his office in MU Students Home this afternoon.
The DESAM activists who came in two Tata Magic vans also thrashed another student of the University identified as Ngariyanbam Milan.
Milan is editor of the university's journal ECHO.
It is reported that both Narayan and Milan are undergoing treatment at Shija Hospitals.
In connection with the assault, eleven DESAM activists have been pulled up from their Keishampat head office, informed a police source.
Terming the incident as very unfortunate, Dean of Students' Welfare Prof Md Islamuddin said that he could not tolerate such assault even if his own son was involved.
The Professor said that the assailants should not have acted in such manner.
Narrating about the incident, Prof Islamuddin said that he heard unusual sounds when he was discussing matters relating to hostel with some students.
"But when I went to Narayan's room, the assailants were already guarding the door", he said.
Soon after, they (assailants) came down and were seen leaving the scene in two vans, the Professor conveyed.
Taking strong exception to the assault on Ksh Narayan of Wangkhei Meihoubam Lampak and Linguistic student Ng Milan of Ghari, students of MU staged a protest demonstration in front of the Students' Home.
Speaking to media persons on the assault, MU Research Club president M Ratankumar said that the student community of the university strongly condemned the bestial act of physical assault.
In case, DESAM commits such folly ever again, it would be better for all to uproot DESAM from the land, he said.
Citing reports, Ratankumar said that two DESAM functionaries H Thoithoi and LC Santosh, were among the assailants.
The assailants came to MUSU office with newspapers containing the press release issued by MUSU regarding inaction of MU authority on the fraudulent practice of former MUSU and DESAM president Ashirjit Luwang admitting himself to MU using forged BA certificate.
The assailants also asked MUSU to clarify on the same press release.
Refusal to comply with their demand might be the reason for attacking Narayan and Milan, Ratankumar conveyed.
