At least four protestors were hospitalized today when police baton charged to a group of people storming the Bishnupur district police headquarter outrage over the detention of a social worker after called up by the SP of the district.
Moirangthem Ashwinikumar (39) of Keibul Lamjao presently residing at Malom, a social worker was called up by the SP Bishnupur police, Jayentakumar on the pretext of having a talk on certain matter.
In response to the summoned Ashwinikumar went to meet the SP at his office at Bishnupur along with the driver of his Bolero brand vehicle (MN01-6998) Haobijam Basanta (28) of Malom today at about 11 am but he was detained by the police there.
Decrying the act of the police in taking custody of the social worker, around 1000 residents of Thanga area came up and stormed at the gate of the Bishnupur police station at about 6 pm in which the police on sentry duty prevented them to enter.
When the people attempted to break the gate of the station, police personnel opened fire tear gas apart from baton charging the people.
In the police action several people sustained injuries.
Among them four persons, Moirangthem Basanta (42), M Rajen (37), M Tola (45) and M Mema (38) were hospitalized due to serious injuries at Bishnupur district hospital.
Rajen sustained injury at his eye.
Later, people coming from Thanga area gathered at a public ground at Kha Potshangbam and formed a JAC against the detention of Ashwinikumar.
The SP, Bishnupur was not available for comment with regard to the incident.
