Consultation meet on social work education ends

A two-day National Consultation on Contextualizing Social Work Education in North Eastern Region concluded here at Hotel Nirmala today with lively and thought provoking discussions on diverse topics correlated or inter-related with the theme.
The meet which began yesterday was organised by the Department of Social Work, Indira Gandhi National Tribal University, Regional Campus Manipur.
In the morning session today which was presided by Dr Deepak Walokar of the Karve Institute of Social Service, Pune, Dr MC Arun of the Department of Anthropology, Manipur University presented a paper on "International Call for Local and Localization of International Tradition of Denying Traditions" .
Dr Kalpana Desai of Mizoram University spoke on "Mental Health and Social Work : Challenges in the NER" while Dr Dhanabir Laishram, former Guest Faculty Member, MU presented a paper on "Human Security in the North East" .
The second session of the day was chaired by Dr Kalpana Desai.
During the session, Dr Homen Thangjam of the Department of Political Science, MB College Imphal spoke on "Free Trade Agreement Between India and the European Union : Potential Impact on the Northeastern States of India", as K Indrakumar of the Department of Political Science, Tamenglong College presented a paper on "Manipur and India's Look East Policy : Critical Insights" .
This was followed by presentation of a paper by Prof Lal Dena of Manipur University on behalf of David Buhril of the Sinlung Indigenous People Human Rights Organisation, Churachandpur on the topic "Dam and Development" .
Dr David S Gangte of the Medicine Sans Frontier Churachandpur wrapped up the session by presenting a paper on "Work Practice of MSF in the Field of HIV/AIDS Particularly in the Cross Border Situation" .
In the concluding session of the day which was chaired by Prof Kumkum Bhattacharya of Visva Bharti, Kolkata, Dr Raheijudin Sheikh of DM College presented a paper on "Minority Issues in Manipur" .
The last paper of the day was presented by PhD scholar, Department of Political Science, Manipur University Michael Luminthang on the topic "Locating Tribal Aspirations in Manipur" .
Earlier yesterday, the consultation meet was opened by Commissioner (Higher Education) Moses Chalai as chief guest and Indira Gandhi National Tribal University, Regional Campus Manipur OSD Th Oliver Monsang as president.
This was followed by a panel discussion programme with Prof Kumkum Bhattacharya, Angsem K of NEEDS Chandel, Dr Deepak Walokar and Ng Ratan of Manipur Network of Positive Peoples as panellists.
The session concluded with screening of the film "Where is My Love", a documentary based on female sex workers in Manipur.
