Imphal, October 13 2010:
Tension ran high at Catholic Medical Centre (CMC), Koirengei with patient's party revolting over the death of a person who had been operated upon twice on appendicitis case.
A resident of Mantripukhri Bengali Colony, 30-year old Sandip Gupta s/o Bimol Gupta was admitted to CMC sometime earlier and Dr Chisthi of the same hospital had performed operation to remove his appendix on October 8 .
Sandip Gupta was working not only as a accountant in Maria Montessori Senior Secondary School but also as the manager of Newmai News Network.
Information received from the hospital said that a day after the operation on October 8, the stomach of the patient started swelling and some faeces-like objects were noticed coming out through the drain.
Concerned over the development and to avoid any complication, the doctors consulted the family members and operation was performed on the patient for the second time on October 11 to see what was amiss.
However, nothing could be found and detected.
Nonetheless, to rest assure that everything was alright, surgical incisions were performed at two parts of the patient's stomach to see whether any faeces have been collected there or not.
But no faeces could be found too.
At around 7 pm yesterday, the patient was found having high temperature.
Accordingly, the doctor on duty gave injection.
After one hour of giving the injection, the temperature came down.
Further treatment was also given to the patient.
But his BP was very low.
At around 2 am today, the condition of the patient deteriorated, Oxygen was provided and life saving drugs injected.
After that the duty doctor contacted Dr Chisthi on his telephone.
However, while efforts were being made to contact him, one of the nurses from the ward came out to announce that the patient breathed his last.
The time of his death was at around 3.45 am.
On the other hand, patient's party have contended that after the patient's stomach was swollen, the attending doctors tried to remove the gases but was not succeeded.
So, the second operation had been conducted at the insistence of the doctors who said that it could not be done without performing another operation.
The patient's party said that they have also proposed for taking the patient to another hospital when the condition of the patient deteriorated yesterday.
But the hospital authority refused.
Performing of operation to remove appendix twice and surgical incision at a couple of places on the stomach spoke a volume on the inefficiency of the doctors, they contended.
On hearing the news about the death of Sandip Gupta, a large number of agitated family members and relatives gathered at the hospital and demanded that Dr Chisthi should be produced and handed over to them.
The tense situation was calm down after a joint meeting of the bereaved family members and the hospital authority.
Only after the hospital authority gave the assurance that Dr Chisthi would not be allowed to continue service at CMC, necessary compensation would be given and medical expenses would be reimbursed, the family members agreed to take back the body.
