Imphal, November 11:
Successful implementation of National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (NREGS) has brought about a sea change and new hope in the life of the people of Magulong village, the corner-most and most backward village in Tousem sub-division of Tamenglong district bordering Assam and Nagaland.
Though endowed with rich natural resources, the village has remained steep in backwardness so much so that it takes atleast two days on foot to reach the district headquarters from the village.
So far there is no motorable road and electric facilities in the village.
Inspite of the bad communication system, mother nature has been bounteous in her blessing on the village.
Mount Kisha, located above the village is not just one of the highest peaks in Tamenglong district having an attitude of approximately 1462 metres from the sea level , its picturesque landscape and undulating ranges would be developed as an attractive tourist spot, if the Government pays some attention on development of the road and communication of the area.
Repeated pleading of the remote villagers to the successive Government for constructing a motorable road to connect the village with Ketumningkam (Barak) which is just 13-14 km away has fallen on deaf ears.
However, with the launched of National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme, the villagers have taken up the onus of constructing the village road with their own muscular strength apart from getting paid for the same.
So far the villagers have completed construction of 2 km long stretch of the road thereby bringing about a sea change in their mobility and daily life.
Buoyed by the success, the villagers are also aiming to extend another 2 km of road construction by next year.
Giving the credit for the changes in the life of the villagers, Magulong Na Students' Union, Magulong Youth Club and the Village Authority have also extended gratitude to Deputy Commissioner of Tamenglong District Thaithuilung Pamei, IAS for having given financial assistance for the construction of the community hall as well as for the extension of the playground of the village.
