Draw of lots to sort out seats from where women candidates would contest in the forthcoming municipal council and nagar panchayat elections, was held today at GM Hall.
The draw of lots held in the presence of MAHUD Director and Executive officer of Imphal Municipal Council, was in accordance with the government of India's policy for 30 percent reservation of seats of women and ensure their presence in all the decision making bodies.
As a result of the lottery system, four seats the total of 12 wards within Kakching Municipal Council would be reserved exclusively for female candidates while elections to the Thoubal Municipal Council will guarantee representation of six females from the total of 18 wards.
In case of Jiribam Municipal Council which was 10 wards four seats would be reserved for women whereas it will be four out of 12 in Moirang Municipal Council; six out of 18 wards in Nambol; five out of 13 in Mayang Imphal Municipal Council; and five out of 14 in Ningthoukhong Municipal Council.
The draw of lots also finalised the number of reserved seats for women candidates at the time of Nagar Panchayat elections.
Accordingly, four seats in the 12-ward Andro Nagar Panchayat (NP) will witness an all-woman contest while it would be three seats apiece out of nine wards each in the Nagar Panchayats of Lilong, Lamshang, Lamlai, Sekmai, Heirok, Wangjing, Sikhong Sekmai, Yairipok, Sugnu, Kakching Khunou, Kumbi and Kwakta.
