Discussion on VAW at Yurembam

Underlining that crimes against women and children are rampant, Secretary of Women Action for Development (WAD), Sobita Mongsatabam has urged the Govt to develop police infrastructure in order to fight the menace of crimes against women and children.
Sobita Mongsatabam was speaking as the resource person of a discussion programme organised by North East Dialogue Forum, WAD, and Meira Paibi Association, Yurembam at Yurembam Makha Leikai Community Hall today.
She noted that due to lack of infrastructure in the Police dept, criminals involved in perpetrating crimes against women and children could not be arrested in time.
It also hampers investigation process.
Asserting that there is lack of infrastructure at police stations, Sobita said even the infrastructure at the stations could not be spared for cases relating to crimes against women and children.
Senior journalist, Irengbam Arun opined that unwanted crimes against women could be done away, if not minimised, when there is gender equality in the society.
He said that women should assert their qualities as human beings.
Other speakers of the programme included Advocate Rabi Khan; L Pishak, Chairperson of Child Welfare Committee, Bishnupur; Amusana of Meira Paibi Association, et al.
Amusana said that fitting punishment should be given to one Deben of Yurembam who not only raped his daughter but is also abetting the abortion of his daughter.
Establishment of a Special Court to conduct trials of criminals who committed crimes against women and children, to repeal AFSPA and to constitute a Working Committee of Manipur Legislative Assembly on violence against women and children are included in the charters of demand adopted during the discussion programme.
Other points included in the charters of demand are constitution of an advisory committee amongst the civil societies to tackle crimes against women, to formulate a code of conduct for law enforcing agency in connection with protection of civilians and all political parties take a concrete stand against crimes against women.
The meet also resolved to send copy each of the charters of demand to the President of India, Prime Minister, DoNER Minister, Union Home Minister and others.
