Imphal, April 28 2011:
Imphal Municipal Council Chairperson Ranisana has appealed to all the vendors to review the concept of hawking or selling things only in Khwairamband Keithel.
She specifically appealed to the street vendors to accept the Government's plan of decentralising markets.
Speaking at an awareness programme organised by Traffic Police at Dharamsala today about keeping Imphal city clean, Ranisana sought public cooperation towards the Government's initiative.
It would be impossible for the Government to provide seats for all the 15,000 street vendors in Khwairamband Keithel.
As for the vacant floors of the three market complexes, it would be used for opening banks, canteens, creche centres etc.
There was an understanding at the time of building the three markets that no vendor plots should be allotted on the first floors of the market complexes.
The programme was also attended by Additional SP Herojit and DSP (Traffic) Victoria.
Members of bazar business community, parking agencies, labourers, rickshaw pullers and shopkeepers participated in the awareness programme.
