Imphal, March 24 2011:
Denouncing Legal Practitioners (Regulation and Maintenance of Standards in Profession, Protecting the Interest of Clients and Promoting the Rule of Law) Bill 2010 legal practitioners/advocates of Manipur staged sit-in-protest.
As a part of the protest held today across the country under the aegis of Bar Council of India, a sit-in-protest was organised by All Manipur Bar Association (AMBA) at premises of Cheirap Court Complex.
Speaking to newspersons on the sideline of the protest, AMBA general secretary Y Priyokumar said the new Bill was brought out by the Government in place of Advocates Act 1961 and once the Bill becomes an Act, the latter would be invalidated.
Contending that the new Bill is an affront to the right, autonomy and interest of legal practitioners/advocates, he asserted that on becoming an Act right of advocates would be severely diluted.
Further informing that a meeting convened by Bar Council of India at Jaipur (Rajasthan) on March 12 had deliberated at length on the Bill, Priyokumar said decision to stage the protest against the Bill was adopted at the said meeting.
He confided that plight of the legal practitioners would be conveyed to the Prime Minister.
